PROPERTIES:
When mixed with water, volcanic fango turns into a natural mudpack, which is ideal for storing heat. A mixture of 1 quart (0.5 liters) of water (also thermal or mineral water at spas) per 1 kg (2.2 lbs.) of volcanic fango yields an optimal consistency for packs to be used for therapeutic purposes. Due to its high capacity of absorption, volcanic fango mud is capable of absorbing body secretions penetrating through the skin.

The thermo physical properties of volcanic fango cause the pack to cool down very slowly. As a result, an intensive and uniform conduction of heat is achieved.

AREAS OF APPLICATION:

THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS:

Mineral peloids play a major role in heat therapy. They are stirred to a pasty substance and applied externally according to doctor’s orders. Combined with massages, physical therapy and thermal baths, fango therapy effectively helps in the treatment as well as the prevention of many diseases of the locomotory system. The temperature of volcanic fangos when applied are in practice: 65°F (15-20°C) for acute disorders; 110°F (37-48°C) for chronic disorders. Cool temperatures have an anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling effect. High temperatures stimulate blood circulation and relieve pain.  They relax the muscles and slacken connective tissues. The most frequent form of application is the heated partial pack, which brings about a deeply penetrating heat into the tissues lasting for some time. The total pack conducts heat over a larger area and increases body temperature. The result is profuse perspiration and stimulation of heart action. Furthermore, adequate doses applied lead to reflective effects on the inner organs and glands.

GEOLOGY:

The volcanic rock “phonolite” has been determined to be, by the potassium-argo method, about 16 million years old. The once volcanic molten lava, of the Miocene Epoch, exists today in solidified form under the fertile loess.

The volcanic rock is broken down in a special way, annealed at 750° F (400° C) and ground very fine.  The manufactured powder is called volcanic fango and has many curative uses. Its main mineral component is natural zeolite, which is capable of high ion exchange.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

Hot fango packs should not be administered when there is an acute inflammation, eczematous or inflammatory skin, when there is a tendency for general or local bleeding, or in the care of heart disease and malignant hypertension, open wounds, over sensitive skin, artery obstructions and malignant tumors.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TREATMENT:

Heat treatments are given daily or every other day; cold treatments, up to three times daily. Apply a thickness of a least 1-inch of volcanic fango onto the skin and cover with plastic thermal blanket. During heat treatments, the entire body is wrapped in a thermal blanket. Following treatment, the client should be quickly showered with water at 100° F (38° C) and carefully dried.
